6:30 PM - 8:00 PM    Fly Fishing! - Intro to Fly Fishing class and practice
Join Maine Guide Patrick O’Shea for one of these introductory Fly Fishing Classes and learn what Fly Fishing is all about. Everyone knows what fishing is, however Fly Fishing is an entirely different sport - it is more than simply dropping a line in the water with some bait. Fly fishing got it’s name because imitations of insects such as mayflies, and many other small bugs are used to attract fish. These intricate little creations attach to hooks of varying sizes and they are called flies. Another important part of fly fishing is casting. What you are trying to accomplish when Fly Casting is to imitate a fish’s natural food as it dances on the water. You are basically trying to outsmart, or trick, the fish. Getting Started In Fly Fishing Want to get started in fly fishing, but don’t know where to begin?  Here is the course for you.  You will learn fly fishing basics of selecting equipment, choosing flies, tying knots, casting, etiquette on the water and where to fish locally.  You will get resources and links to assist with your development as a fly fisher.  You will also have an opportunity to learn the basics of fly casting and get a chance to practice with feedback.  You can bring your own rod and reel or use equipment supplied by Gorham Rec and the instructor. 2 classes-Tuesdays, 4/9 & 4/16, Gorham Recreation6:30-8:00 pm, $35  Getting Started in Fly Fishing - Session 3  Requirement - Participants must complete Getting Started In Fly Fishing (sessions I-II).  Now that you have completed the first part of this course, you are ready for the next step - a short outing on local water for a chance to catch your first fish on a fly.  All tackle, gear, waders, fly rod and flies will be supplied, if needed. Participants will learn safe wading techniques, practice casting a fly rod and how to read a river.  A fishing license is required. Patrick O’Shea is a registered Maine Fishing Guide with experience teaching clients with all levels of experience from beginners to experienced fly fishermen. See Go Fish Guide Service:  www.goflyfishmaine.com  Date to be determined by instructor and students.$50

6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23$5.00 Pollinators are critical for a healthy planet.   Almost 90% of all plant species need pollinators to produce new plants.   Over 75% of all crops grown for food, fiber, and medicines rely on pollinators.  But their populations are in trouble here in the United States and worldwide.  The good news is that every landowner can take action to reverse this trend and support our native pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths, and flies.  Learn what to do from selecting pollinator friendly flowering plants to providing breeding habitat and other important life cycle needs to support pollinators.   Instructor: Jeanne Christie, Maine Master Gardener and Maine Master Naturalist
