We are currently seeking a full-time Recreation Programmer to join our Recreation Department team. The Recreation Programmer assists with the daily operations and implementation of a comprehensive Recreation Program for the Gorham Community.  The Programmer assists in the coordination of recreational, educational, leisure, and athletic programs. This role involves considerable contact with the public, including adults and children. The Recreation Programmer coordinates facilities, staff, and activities for a variety of program events, which may necessitate working a variable and/or flexible schedule based on the needs of the Recreation Department to include some nights and weekends.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Director. Additional oversight and guidance may be provided by other Recreation Department staff, including the Camps & Child Care Manager, Sports & Community Activities Manager, and Office Manager/Programmer, as needed to ensure program objectives are accomplished.


Minimum of a High School diploma, or equivalent, required. Associates degree in a related field preferred. A minimum of one year related work experience required. Current certifications in CPR and First Aid preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within six months of hire required. Must hold a valid Driver’s License and be insurable in a normal risk pool. Must have the ability and willingness to obtain a Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit within six months of hire and CDL license with passenger and airbrake endorsements within one year of hire.

Sports Program Instructors-CDC Compliant Small Group Sport Activities

This position is responsible for in-person leadership and instruction of various youth sport programs to include soccer, basketball, softball, baseball.  All youth sport program instructors will have knowledge of and skill in the particular sport being offered and be able to break the components of the sport down into instructional segments that identify and practice skill development.  Activity will include skill building games, relays, individual skill sessions, putting together the stages of the sport to develop the players’ foundation for success. Work hours are variable (4-20 hours a week) and generally occur Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings and afternoons at different sports fields throughout the Town.

Shaw Park Ambassador 
Covid-19 Response Pilot Program
An Ambassador is defined as a person who acts as representation or promotor of a specified activity. The Gorham Shaw Park Ambassador program is a way for Town government to promote awareness of the importance of keeping our parks safe and clean for all users.
Ambassadors can play a key role in keeping our parks clean and beautiful by explaining the carry-in/carry-out, zero touch trash policy for removing your own trash and recyclables at the end of your visit.   A training program will be provided prior to Ambassadors going out into the Park.

We are currently seeking a full-time Sports & Communities Activities Manager to join
our Recreation Department team. This is a working management position responsible for planning, scheduling, implementing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of the youth and adult sports programs and community activities offered by the Recreation Department.

Facilities Maintenance Manager/Programmer

The Town of Gorham is accepting applications for the full-time, hourly position of Facilities Maintenance Manager/Programmer with the Recreation Department.  This is a working management position responsible for handling all aspects of athletic fields and parks maintenance including, but not limited to, maintaining parks, fields, landscaped areas, gymnasiums, restrooms, and various equipment.  Participates in the coordination and supervision of various recreation programs, special events, and activities; transports program participants to events; and supervises part-time seasonal employees and volunteers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Director, but independent judgment and ingenuity must be exercised in accomplishing objectives.

Duties include providing a safe environment for children to have fun and be active, managing children’s behavior in an appropriate manner. Prior experience working with children required.

The hours of the position are normally 7 am – 9 am and/or 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday, 10 -29 hours a week. The work schedule may change based on the needs of the program and activities.

Sports Program Supervisors
This position is responsible for general oversight of the Department’s sports leagues and programs. Acts as a visible representative of the Gorham Recreation Department and provides for a clean, safe, and secure environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Youth & Adult Programs Director. Work hours are variable (4-20 hours a week) and generally occur Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings and afternoons at different sports fields throughout the Town.

Fields Maintenance/Grounds laborers
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Grounds & Maintenance Manager. This position is responsible working on all aspects of athletic fields and parks maintenance.  This is to include, but not limited to, maintenance of all the parks, fields, landscaped areas, gymnasiums, restrooms and assorted equipment under the direction of the Recreation Department.  The individual in this position will also assist where warranted in programs, special events and activities.  Work also includes the responsibility to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks incidental to the operation of assigned equipment and to lift heavy objects.
